i work for a credit union and if that was me I'd be discussing it with the bank to find out what the heck is going on, because i work for one. I know that sooner or later they'd find the error and correct it and i don't need my account going that overdrawn. NOW that being said, the video says he had it for several weeks. for it to take wells fargo that long to see it is bad on their part.

I had something similiar happen many years ago---the company I worked for started direct depositing my paychecks (I was going on vacation so it was good), however, when I got back I was still getting live check AS WELL AS the direct deposit---seems the idiot company I worked for was not paying someone else BUT depositing THEIR pay into my account----and then they direct UN-deposited.

bad thing about direct deposit--what they put in, they can take back out (even if you dont have the funds!--another company I worked for messed up the paychecks many times--my boss was in charge of it and she is an idiot--so people would get paid, and then a day or so later, the money would be taken back out--lots of peeps had problems with this).

If you get extra cash in your account, and you DONT know where it came from LEAVE IT ALONE, call the bank and have them figure it out, if you use it and you dont have the funds to cover it when its removed --you can have BIG problems!!!
(most big banks are HORRIBLE--dont use them wells is one of them who does stupid things, I worked for a part of them too at one point).

Exactly the same applies in the UK - don't touch it, they can direct debit it the heck out of there

Yeah I remember getting an $800 deposit into my account I never knew how I got it. However, I idiotically mentioned that I didn't know how that money was entered to my account... Apparently there are people who know how to hack into ATM's and debit accounts.

As for your reply Neith, are Credit Unions the same as Collections?

I live in Canada and I have seen people from the USA with Credit cards with Interact in them. Is that a Smart idea or a dumb one? I would Imagine that your debit card has a credit card function in it, if I am not mistaken? And if so, I would imagine that the consumer would have to be weary of what they are spending and keeping track. (In Canada they are slowly introducing these cards)

dont know about those as I refuse to get a debit card (hard enough to keep track if hubby gets the check book---)...my cc cant be used as a debit so no worries there (and they are pretty dang touchy about using it other places---going out of state, call them first type....had one card that I wasnt allowed to use outside my little hick city unless I called them first)....I would NEVER use my cc at an atm (cash advances on a cc are charged like 52% interest rate!!).

I am ALWAYS weary!! (yes this coming from the person who doesnt even own a cell phone---)
get me my tinfoil hat!!

having worked for Bank of America in the past i have seen this situation countless times, the only thing you can tell people when they ask is "its just an error, please don't spend it because it WILL be taken back out." that guy should've called his bank instead of assuming "hey free money!"

I just don't get how banks make mistakes like this? Does it happen when someone's name is similar to the person who is getting the money? Or someone forgot to carry a number?

PEOPLE work in banks, so mistakes get made plain and simple.
I worked in the proofing department (we processed all the checks that came thru)...we made LOTS of mistakes---we processed hundreds of thousands of checks DAILY, you spend 8 hours looking and horrible handwriting and trying to decipher it and you would get the idea.
Its not done by names, its done by NUMBERS....just typing an 8 instead of a 9 could lead to a whole different account number ...and most banking people do touch typing and ten key so they arent looking at what they are typing out....so the error goes unnoticed until someone down the line points it out. (usually account numbers are a bunch of digits different, but sometimes you can get another account by doubling a number or so).
HAPPENS ALL THE TIME!

which is why you should check your banking statements when you get them, banks DO make mistakes, quite often. (I also worked for a company that did credit card payments--and you can image the errors we got--good thing that companies have you send the payment slip--and account number-- with or your payments would go to lala land).

Recently had an semi large ammount of money put into my bank account, and i didnt have a clue what it was, and sadly my bank could not tell me either, so they told me the obvious thing, let it be, and wait a few months, then talk to them again.
then a month later, i got 1/4th of what i got the last month, and now the bank could tell me that the cash came from an insurance from my late mother, and the company just had missed the first 4 months.

crazy stuff

It was clearly an error because US and UK banks don't give large sums of money to the public to spend recklessly. They TAKE large sums of money from the public to spend recklessly.
